Celebrating 25 years in service, Community Solutions is still looking towards the future with a focus on developing services that enhance the quality of life for people with various disabilities as well as seniors.
Community Solutions was founded in 1994 by its directors Barbara Claiman and Cathy Howard. Both women gained many years of experience in the public sector, working with people with various disabilities, including acquired brain injury (ABI). During this time, they identified a major gap in the services available to individuals with ABI in smaller urban and rural settings; for example, once an individual was discharged from an in-patient rehabilitation setting, they returned to their home and community where limited services were available to support them and their unique needs.
Community Solutions grew from Barbara and Cathy’s shared vision of linking an individual’s inpatient rehabilitation to their reintegration into home and community living. They envisioned a company that could provide ‘one to one’ rehabilitation support services in the home and community in order to increase an individual’s independence and quality of life.
Community Solutions was originally based in Toronto; however, the intention was to extend services to individuals residing in smaller urban and rural communities. Currently, services are provided from Toronto north to Timmins and east to Kingston. As a result, provision of Rehabilitation Support Worker, Community Support Worker, and Personal Support Worker services are available in numerous smaller urban and rural locations across a good part of this region.
Always looking at ways to enhance the quality of peoples’ lives, Community Solutions launched its successful Cottage Getaway in 2007. These “getaways” range from a full week in the summer to long weekends in the spring and fall and are offered in a fully accessible cottage. In 2008, the Directors created a service that provides Accessible Travel to those who wish to travel but face certain challenges that prohibit them from doing so. Community Solutionss Accessible Travel service provides specific support required by the individual that enables them to successfully and enjoyably travel for business or pleasure. The service provides expert support to travelers with disabilities and mature travelers throughout Canada and the United States. Community Solutions also provides individuals the opportunity to remain in the community, in their own homes or with family members, by offering 24/7 life-long support through teams of highly skilled staff. Most recently, in 2013, Community Solutions developed a Supported Independent Living Program that offers individuals the opportunity to live in their own apartments in the community with 24/7 supervision, while receiving the necessary individualized support they require to live productive and meaningful lives.
Community Solutions is now recognized for its comprehensive community integrated approach. Originally a company with two employees and 3 clients, it now employs a significant number of staff with a constantly growing client and referral base. It is now a thriving, privately owned, fee-for-service company, providing post acute rehabilitation and support services for adults and children with brain injuries and other neurological challenges through a spectrum of community based programs.
Today, Community Solutions is still looking towards the future with a focus on developing services that enhance the quality of life for people with various disabilities as well as seniors.
